Wellness begins with Ayurveda

The benefits of Ayurvedic remedies have stood the test of time, proving their effectiveness over centuries and remaining just as relevant today. Ayurveda offers numerous natural solutions to help balance the body’s doshas, promoting overall health and well-being. The essence of this ancient science lies in maintaining harmony between the mind, body, and soul through a holistic approach.

A World Health Organization (WHO) medicine strategy report supports this, stating: “For millions of people, Ayurvedic medicines, traditional treatments, and traditional practitioners are the main source of health care — and at times, the only source. This care is local, accessible, and affordable. Beyond affordability, such traditional systems offer valuable support in managing the growing challenge of chronic non-communicable diseases.”

Each herb or plant in Ayurveda possesses unique healing qualities and can address a wide range of ailments. Rich in nutrients and endowed with antibacterial and antioxidant properties, Ayurvedic herbs are non-toxic by nature. Remedies and products derived from them are therefore valued for their high therapeutic potential and natural effectiveness.

Know your symptom - Find your home remedy

Ayurveda emphasizes the holistic well-being of the entire body, and therefore, simply taking a remedy is not enough to attain complete health. True wellness requires additional supportive practices that help maintain a state of happiness, vitality, and balance. Through the use of various medicinal plants and spices with detoxifying properties—combined with appropriate dietary habits and lifestyle modifications—Ayurveda seeks to restore harmony between the body, mind, and spirit.

toothache

home remedies for toothache

A toothache isn’t always caused by an underlying disease. It can result from everyday factors such as biting into something hard, flossing, or having food particles trapped between teeth or braces. For children, tooth pain can also be a normal part of their developmental process.

Ingredients for Toothache

Asafetida can provide almost instant relief from pain and is especially effective for toothaches caused by cavities.

Home Remedies for Toothache

1. Clove Oil

Since ancient times, Ayurvedic practitioners in India have used the aromatic spice clove and its oil to relieve toothaches. It not only eases pain but also soothes gum soreness caused by infection or irritation. Clove oil, extracted primarily from the bud and stem of the Eugenia caryophyllus (clove plant), works by numbing the affected nerve.

Method:

  • Mix 2–3 drops of clove oil with ½ teaspoon of olive oil.

  • Soak a small cotton ball in the mixture and place it on the affected tooth.

  • Leave it for a few minutes until the area feels numb and the pain subsides.

  • Rinse your mouth with water.

  • Repeat once daily for 2–3 weeks or until the pain disappears.

  • You can also mix clove oil with coconut oil for added benefits.

2. Garlic

Garlic, known for its natural antibiotic properties, is an effective home remedy for toothache. It helps fight infection and provides quick relief from pain.

Method:

  • Crush 2–3 garlic cloves with a pinch of salt and pepper.

  • Apply the paste on the affected tooth.

  • Leave it on until the pain reduces.

  • Repeat daily until relief is achieved.

3. Onion

Onions have strong antibacterial and antiseptic properties that help kill germs responsible for infections and tooth pain.

Method:

  • Place a slice of raw onion on the affected tooth.

  • Gently bite it to release the juice and keep it pressed for about 10 minutes.
  • Rinse your mouth with water afterward.

  • Repeat once daily for 2–3 weeks.
Though the taste of raw onion may be strong, its pain-relieving effect is long-lasting.

4. Asafetida

Asafetida is a traditional Ayurvedic ingredient known to relieve toothaches and bleeding gums, while promoting overall oral health.

Method:

  • Mix a pinch of asafetida with a teaspoon of lemon juice and warm it slightly.

  • Soak a cotton ball in the mixture and apply it to the affected area for 10–15 minutes.

  • Use this remedy once or twice a week until the pain subsides.

  • Alternatively, slightly fry asafetida in clarified butter (ghee) and apply it on the gums for relief.

5. Ginger

A combination of ginger and cayenne pepper can work wonders in alleviating tooth pain due to their anti-inflammatory and warming properties.

Method:

  • Mix ½ teaspoon of ginger paste with an equal amount of cayenne pepper.

  • Add a few drops of olive oil and apply the mixture to the painful area.

  • Leave it for 10–15 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

  • Repeat once or twice a week as needed.

6. Alcohol

Although not often recommended, alcohol can temporarily help numb tooth pain. However, this method should not be used for children. Note: this refers to topical application, not consumption.

Method:

  • Soak a cotton ball in a spoonful of whiskey and squeeze out the excess.

  • Place it on the sore tooth for a few minutes.

  • Repeat when necessary for temporary relief.

7. Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is another effective remedy for numbing tooth pain and refreshing the mouth.

Method:

  • Mix a few drops of peppermint oil with olive oil.

  • Dip a small cotton swab in the mixture and place it on the affected area for 10–15 minutes.

  • Repeat when required.

8. Sea Salt

Toothaches often result from bacterial growth and acid buildup in the mouth. A warm saltwater rinse helps neutralize acid, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain.

Method:

  • Warm a cup of water to a comfortable temperature.

  • Add ½ teaspoon of sea salt and stir well.

  • Rinse your mouth thoroughly with the solution 10–15 times or until pain eases.

  • Repeat once or twice daily for 3–4 weeks.

9. Cucumber

Cucumber has a natural cooling and soothing effect, making it an excellent toothache remedy. Its mild hemostatic property helps reduce blood flow to the painful area, easing discomfort.

Method:

  • Mix a spoonful of grated cucumber with a few drops of lemon juice.

  • Apply the paste to the affected area and leave it on for 10 minutes.

  • Once the pain subsides, rinse with cold water.

  • Repeat daily if required.

10. Turmeric

Turmeric’s antibacterial and antiseptic properties help heal infections and reduce inflammation in the gums and teeth.

Method:

  • Mix turmeric powder with oil (such as coconut or olive oil) to form a thick paste.

  • Apply it to the affected tooth using a cotton ball.

  • Leave it on for 10 minutes.

  • Rinse your mouth with water afterward.

  • Repeat daily until the pain subsides for best results.

Note : While these Ayurvedic and home remedies can offer temporary relief from toothache, it’s essential to visit your dentist regularly to maintain good oral health. If the pain persists, consult a dental professional to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
